A few weeks ago Steve Danz invited me to the Endeavour Awards as one of his guests. I felt honoured by this gesture and eagerly awaited the day.
Upon arrival, I realised how momentous this night would be. It wasn’t until later the weight of the evening hit me. This is what I read about in the news, or a history book, not attend! There were so many people there who were significant I felt out of place.
This event is put on by Angel Flight West. Angel Flight is a way for pilots and aircraft owners to donate their time or aircraft time to help people in need.
Steve was awarded the Endeavour 1000 award. First Angel Flight pilot to fly 1000 missions!
There were almost 500 people at this event, including volunteer pilots, sponsors, and partners of Angel Flight West.
‘Sully’ Sullenberger, an inspirational airline captain who saved 155 lives with the help of his first officer and crew, made an appearance at the beginning of the event. I was very close to having a picture with him. Instead, I have an instrument approach plate, a chart detailing how to approach an airport with the only reference to onboard aircraft instruments, that details the events of the day he is famous for.
Greg Danz and I ‘dressed to the nines.’
I looked around after the event and saw a few iconic people and decided to introduce myself.
He said he flew every shuttle but the Endeavour, that’s out of this world!
Pilot, news anchor, and speaker. She has recreated the global flight of her namesake and inspired youth across the world. It was a pleasure to meet her.
